History
William Carter developed spacious estates which he called garden villages, and traded property, in the late 19th century under his own name, then as William Carter’s Estates and finally, from the beginning of the 20th century, through Homesteads Limited.
William Carter incorporated the original Homesteads Limited company number 75932 in 1903. After transferring his pre-existing property assets into Homesteads Limited, he resumed his estate development business, through the company, until his death in 1921. His family continued to run the Company until 1963 when all the remaining Homesteads Limited’s assets - except a single property in Rainham, Essex - were transferred to a new company with the same family ownership and management. The new company number 759121, initially called Homesteads (Estates) Limited traded also as Kinson Limited and Kinson PLC then reverted subsequently to the name Homesteads Limited. The original Homesteads Limited company 75932, after changing its name to Homesteads (Securities) Limited, was eventually dissolved in 1979.
The current Homesteads Limited is still owned and run by a member of William Carter’s family and holds all William Carter’s and the original Homesteads Limited’s residual land holdings and rights: including the benefit of all restrictive covenants where these have not been transferred to residents’ associations.
